A Bill for a Law to Establish a Lagos State Indigenous Language Education Programme for Public Primary Schools, and for Connected Purposes

A Law to provide that every public primary school in Lagos State shall teach Yoruba as a compulsory subject from Primary 1 to Primary 6, and shall offer at least one additional Nigerian indigenous language (Igbo, Hausa, or another major language ordinarily spoken by a substantial number of pupils in the school's catchment) as an elective from Primary 4. The State shall fund the development of a standardised curriculum, the training and retraining of teachers, and the production of approved textbooks. Implementation shall be phased across three academic years following commencement.
